Comparing Far-Right Transphobia in So-Called Canada to Don Hamerquist’s Analysis On Third Position Fascism

It's Going Down - Sun, 04/14/2024 - 22:11

Analysis of growing far-Right movements centered around attacking trans people in so-called Canada.

There is a growing fascist movement in so-called Canada, it first appeared from the shadows as the Freedom Convoy which led directly to Hands Off Our Kids. While fascism has been a long time problem in Canada, and there were underground sects that morphed into this current movement, the point of this article isn’t a historical analysis on how it came to be, its to show the dangers of this specific movement that is largely being ignored or downplayed by anti-capitalists and anti-fascists, probably because it doesn’t fit the traditional definition of fascism, its closer to the third position. The third position isn’t the same as the commonly accepted kind of fascism, mostly differentiated by its relationship to capitalism and the ruling class. According to Don Hamerquist, traditional fascism is “a policy of capitalist reaction intended to counter the possibility of a serious working class challenge to capital.” Or as explained by anarchist Durruti, “When the bourgeoisie sees power slipping from its grasp, it has recourse to fascism to maintain itself.” This article seeks to point out the similarities between the fascist far-Right and Third Position writings from Don Hamerquist, a militant communist and anti-fascist. Unfortunately this article doesn’t have a lot citation for the present day far-Right as it is largely based on first hand experience in Southern Ontario, an area rife with these people. The far-Right in this area is growing and recruiting alarmingly fast and the so-called left isn’t stepping up to counter them. This isn’t to say that the growing transphobic far-Right in so-called Canada is theoretically identical to the historical third position fascism, however there are a lot of parallels in Don Hamerquists writings on the third position comparable to today’s far-Right in so-called Canada. It’s unclear if the current far-Right is intentionally trying to copy the third position, these parallels may not be intentional. The danger of this movement needs to be acknowledged if we have any hope of defeating the current far-Right and their bigotry.

In “Third Position” published May 2001 Hamerquist wrote about this brand of fascism being overtly pro-working class which is a rhetoric espoused by the Freedom Convoy. He also writes about it in Fascism & Anti-Fascism, “It [Third Position] makes a direct appeal to a working class audience with a warped, but militant, socialist racialist-nationalist program of decentralized direct action.” The Freedom Convoy appealed to the working class, is decentralized as well as extremely nationalist in character. The convoy was always rife with the far-Right and anti-trans rhetoric they just hid it from their mainstream discourse. They built a base with a seemingly innocent stance of “protect kids” and “freedom from the government” but protecting children from the trans agenda is a guise they use to hide the beginning stages of an outright trans genocide. Hitler wasn’t a third positionist, he was a traditional fascist, but this is similar to how he claimed to be protecting children from Jewish people.

Far-Right ideology is insidious, fascists look for vulnerable people, warping facts and using logical fallacies to recruit to their cause. The far-Right also uses the culture wars to recruit to their cause and so-called leftists (especially those online) can be absolutely useless when it comes to countering said phenomena. Examples of far-Right recruitment tactics include going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and recruiting vulnerable people from said meetings. Also finding vulnerable women who have survived medical trauma and winning them to the far-Right with pseudo science. This has a large overlap with trad wives (for more information read Sister’s in Hate by Seyawrd Darby). Some people in the far-Right movement are useful idiots who are gullible, and desperate for community because of the isolation from capitalist individualism. Community, compassion and patient explanation can work in the beginning phases of bringing people back from this kind of ideology. But there comes a point where they are too far gone and sadly lost to the world of the far-Right. They have become fascists; enemies of the class struggle and the oppressed.

Hands Off Our Kids is not a white supremacist movement. However it is a fascist, religious fundamentalist movement composed of various Abrahamic religions and far-Right, transphobic ideology. The “left” in so-called Canada is largely being white saviors about this, preferring to see trans people murdered in cold blood than cast aside their postmodern, romanticization of BIPOC communities. This has serious “noble savage” racist vibes. Just because someone is a member of one oppressed demographic that doesn’t mean they get to be oppressive towards other groups. The trans community does not need this bastardization of the oppression olympics from white cis saviours, we need to abolish oppression in every form. Black Lives Matter correctly pointed out that white LGBTQ+ people can be racist, so we need to apply that logic to other forms of oppression. The far-Right is gaining traction fast, while we do need to be careful this doesn’t turn into racism and islomophobia, there is presently a growing violent movement against trans people and that movement needs to be eliminated.

This rising far-Right movement isn’t identical to textbook third position but if we look at another Hamerquist quote from Fascism & Anti-Fascism “the so-called “third position” – a fascist variant that present itself as “national revolutionary” with politics that are “beyond left and right”.” One paragraph down in the same text he cites their support for liberation movements such as Ireland and Palestine. It needs to be stressed what’s going on in Palestine is a genocide and Palestine should be free, Zionism is fascism. However the white far-Right supports the Palestine liberation movement because they equate Zionism with Judaism, and are extremely anti-Semitic. While there are white supremacist elements in the far-Right movement, the movement as a whole is not traditional white supremacy. They are a kind of fascism akin to the third position.

Hamerquist says it best in his essay Fascism & Anti-Fascism, “Two points: First, there is a real potential for working relationships and alliances between white fascist movements and various nationalist and religious tendencies among oppressed peoples. In no way does this potential involve the denial of the reality of white supremacy and racial and national oppression. It only means that the left cannot count on the responses to this pattern of oppression, privilege and domination fitting into its neat and comfortable categories. Second, there is no reason to view fascism as necessarily white just because there are white supremacist fascists. To the contrary there is every reason to believe that fascist potentials exist throughout the global capitalist system. African, Asian, and Latin American fascist organizations can develop that are independent of, and to some extent competitive with Euro-American “white” fascism.” A few paragraphs later he writes “In this country and around the world some of these fascist blocs will be, and, in fact, already are, Black and Brown.” While he is talking about America, Canada has enough similarities one can apply the same lesson to our own home grown fascist movement.

On a similar note, Trans Exclusive Radical Feminists (TERFs) are pouring into anti-capitalist and working class spaces in so-called Canada. This again ties to Hamerquist’s position about the third position guising itself as working class. They guise their beliefs as working class feminism, use white women tears and the women are nice effect to vilify trans people, and men all too often revert to misogyny and protecting women who are perceived as the weaker sex, siding with the TERFs to further platform their bigotry. Plenty of feminists and BIPOC women have written very astute pieces about white woman tears regarding racism. For those unfamiliar with white woman tears, in a nutshell what happens is a white woman cries about how mean a BIPOC person was to them (often this BIPOC person was trying to address racism and discrimination). The white men in the room see the woman crying and immediately rush to her defense, because of conscious or unconscious misogyny they perceive women as the weaker sex and in need of protection. This is linked to the women are nice effect, which is the form of sexism that perceives women as more compassionate and delicate than men. Ironically women being the weaker sex who need a man to protect them is a pillar of trad wife ideology. Again this logic and type of oppressive behavior needs to be applied to transphobia if we want to end oppression in the fight against capitalism and fascism. Cis women do this to perpetuate transphobic and trans exclusive ideology. This forces trans people out of anti-capitalist and working class spaces. It’s also worth noting that not every person who does this is far-Right, some are just liberals, but regardless of their intentions liberals always end up helping the far-Right perpetuate their bigotry, they never actually help those being targeted. Racism is also a very real problem. This is not intended to take away from discussions about racism, but rather amplify BIPOC and women’s voices regarding this type of oppression and apply it to transphobia.

Far-Right bigotry has real word consequences. Doctors are hesitant to treat trans patients, especially youth. Some medical centers are even stopping their programs for trans youth because of far-Right intimidation. This is going to cause a rise in trans kids being traumatized and dying by suicide. Surgery, puberty blockers and hormone therapy saves lives. Puberty blockers are a temporary pause button that can eliminate the need for some surgeries and also stop irreversible changes caused by puberty. Puberty for trans people living with dysphoria is awful and traumatic. Trans people in Canada are being violently attacked but no official statistics are available because the trans community learned long ago not to trust police. Even if trans violence is reported cops don’t give a sh*t, which skews the potential for accurate statics even further. There have been at least two trans masculine youth murdered this year, Nex Benedict and Alex Franco. There are probably more who have gone unreported because of transphobia and the denial of our existence. There are also first hand reports on social media of the far-Right opening fire on trans women, queer bashings, and even attempts to run trans people over with cars/trucks. The last two happening in Southern Ontario. Hitler also targeted the trans community, Night of Long Knives and the infamous Nazi book burning destroyed the records Magnus Hirschfeld, a doctor who was medically treating dysphoria in trans people. Targeting the medical establishment was an early step of trans genocide in Nazi Germany, and its being targeted today by the far-Right in Canada.

So what can be done? Trans people need to do everything they can to defend ourselves. Enough of this “tender queer” bullsh*t, recognize we are fighting for our lives and start fighting back. If you aren’t trans, educate yourself on what transphobia and trans exclusive radical feminism looks like and actually stand up for us, not online, in the real world. If you care about anti-fascism it needs to be recognized that this isn’t a “culture war” its the beginning phases of a genocide. Treat it accordingly. Stop playing into the neo-liberal culture wars, this includes performative language/actions, safer spaces policies, clout chasing and diversity quotas. Fine tuning the terms and language we use to talk about transphobia won’t stop fascism. This kind of rhetoric can be pretty common in anarchist spaces in Southern Ontario, what we need is more propaganda by the deed. Reading more theory about direct action, anti-fascism and anarchism is complimentary to direct actions. Direct actions with no education is running around in circles but theory with no direct action is an academic circle jerk. As queer revolutionaries we need to start balancing these things. Deplatform assholes spewing TERF and anti-trans rhetoric, treat it the same you would any other form of fascism and bigotry.

Start taking this seriously, trans people are fighting for our lives and we can’t do it alone.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 191: Iran Launches Retaliatory Strikes

- Sun, 04/14/2024 - 18:00

On Saturday night, Iran launched its retaliatory strike on Israel for Israel’s bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed two senior Iranian generals and ten others. Tensions had been rising in the week preceding Iran’s eventual attack, as both Israel and Iran exchanged threats and conducted maneuvers in preparation for the escalation. However, Reuters had reported on Thursday that Iran’s foreign minister, Hussein Amir Abdellahian, informed Washington during a visit to Oman that Iran would conduct its response in a way that “avoids escalation,” and that another U.S. intelligence source said “Iran was very clear” that its retaliatory strike would be “under control.”

Iran Had Legal Right To Counter-Attack Israel In Self-Defense

- Sun, 04/14/2024 - 17:52

Iran launched a historic attack on April 13, hitting Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles.

Tehran invoked article 51 of the charter of the United Nations, which allowed it to act in self-defense in response to Israel’s bombing of Iran’s embassy in Syria on April 1.

The US, Canada, and European governments loudly condemned Iran’s April 13 attack, portraying Tehran as the aggressor. However, Western officials failed to mention that Iran was acting in self-defense.

Before the Iranian counter-attack, the leading British think tank Chatham House published an article admitting that the “Israeli attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus on 1 April marks an unprecedented escalation by Israel against Iran in Syria”.

Nicaragua Takes Germany To The World Court For Facilitating Genocide

- Sun, 04/14/2024 - 17:47

As Israel’s genocidal campaign against the Palestinians in Gaza — which has killed more than 33,000 Gazans — enters its seventh month, Nicaragua sued Germany in the International Court of Justice (ICJ, or World Court) for facilitating genocide.

Nicaragua charged that, “Germany has provided political, financial and military support to Israel fully aware at the time of authorization that the military equipment would be used in the commission of great breaches of international law,” adding, “The military equipment provided by Germany enabling Israel to perpetrate genocidal acts and other atrocities, included supplies to the front line and warehouses, and assurances of future supplies such as ammunition, technology and diverse components necessary for the Israeli military.”

The 2010s were a decade of revolt. From Athens to Atlanta, Santiago to Seoul, a global wave of protest brought masses of people into confrontation with the status quo, demanding an end to neoliberalism, racism, climate change, and more. Yet despite this upswell of grassroots political activity, little lasting, positive change followed. What sparked the past decade of mass protest? SCOTUS Is Set To Make A Watershed Ruling On Homelessness

- Sun, 04/14/2024 - 16:45

This month, the Supreme Court will begin to hear one of the highest-profile court cases about homelessness in generations. City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson considers whether a local government can outlaw sleeping outside if adequate shelter is not accessible.

If the Court sides with Grants Pass, cities will be able to rely on punitive policies that do little to nothing to decrease homelessness and often cause worse outcomes for unhoused people in the process. If it favors Johnson, local governments will be required to demonstrate adequate shelter is available for an individual before resorting to harsh enforcement tactics.

The Green New Deal: From Below Or From Above?

- Sun, 04/14/2024 - 16:42

The original Green New Deal resolution took as its models not only the original New Deal but also the home front mobilization for World War II. A fully developed Green New Deal will need both the kind of federal initiative and strong federal agencies that transformed the American economy during World War II and the popular participation and decentralized creativity represented by the Green New Deal from Below.

The Green New Deal from Below can make a significant difference in reducing greenhouse gas pollution, creating good jobs, and countering injustice.

Making Community

- Sun, 04/14/2024 - 16:37

If we consider that we as a people could soon face a climate-related collapse of our economic infrastructure, how might we avert this outcome? Or, failing that, be able to continue on while maintaining a civil society? It can be seen that the root of the crisis lies in our behavior, our individual and social behavior – which is a cultural problem. Yet, because each of us lives our lives embedded in our culture, we live and think within the domain we have inherited. If our current ways of thinking are much the basis for our crisis, we must make every effort to think again, and differently.

“Russophobia, the Ukraine war, and nuclear weapons” Panel Discussion

La Jicarita - Sun, 04/14/2024 - 12:00

“Russophobia, the Ukraine war, and nuclear weapons” Panel discussion Tuesday April 16, 6 pm, St. John’s United Methodist Church, 1200 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe (map)

The Los Alamos Study Group (LASG) is sponsoring a panel of Peter Kuznick, Steven Starr, and Greg Mello of LASG to discuss the dangerous phenomenon of “Russophobia” in the West in the context of the potentially widening war in Ukraine, with its attendant nuclear dangers. Dr. Kuznick is a Professor of History and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University. He is the coauthor with Oliver Stone of 12-part documentary and companion book, “The Untold History of the United States” and is in high demand around the world as an analyst of current events. Steve Starr is a medical scientist and former department chair at the University of Missouri. He was a Senior Scientist with Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) and is a board member of LASG.

All three have been following developments in U.S.-Russian relations on a daily basis. LASG has conducted multiple teach-ins on the Ukraine war since 2014 and maintains a news and analysis page updated more or less daily regarding this war, with occasional commentary. In March 2022 its prescription for peace in Ukraine was, with the encouragement of the late John Pilger, published here and in Europe (Zeit-Fragen). Mello’s views were highlighted and criticized in a prominent local news article early last year (“Anti-nuclear activist opposes helping Ukraine, encourages peace,” Santa Fe New Mexican, Feb 5, 2023).

Failure to heed warnings such as these has cost hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian lives and tens of thousands of Russian lives. At this point Ukraine is basically a broken country surviving on donations and “loans,” which has lost much of its productive population to emigration and battlefield casualties.

Should the U.S. House appropriate the proposed $61 billion in additional “aid” as is now likely (the Senate has already passed the bill; most of the money will go to U.S. arms manufacturers), Ukraine will be even more destroyed than it already is.

This is what Columbia professor Jeffrey Sachs’s says of the situation:

This is purely money down the drain. If they want to rip up another $61 billion, which is not chump change, they seem intent on doing it but it will mean nothing except more destruction of Ukraine.

If you don’t listen to the nonsense in our mainstream media, but listen to your show [The Hills “Rising”] and others, people would know that this war has destroyed Ukraine. And the longer it continues, the less there will be of Ukraine. It is very simple, if this goes on longer, Russia will capture more territory. If it goes on long enough, Russia will capture Odessa. Kiev, if we continue the way we’re doing. This is a Biden project that goes back 10 years now, will completely destroy Ukraine. The idea that this is “siding with” Ukraine is absurd. Anyone who really follows events knows that we’re not siding with Ukraine, we have paid for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to go to the front lines and die, for more and more territory to be lost.

The most basic point of this war, which is that we overthrew a government in Ukraine in 2014 that wanted neutrality so we could push NATO enlargement was reckless, stupid, and doomed to fail. And it failed. Now Biden is trying to hide the failure to get past November, but the failure is seen on the battleground every day.

If the Republicans play into this, it is unbelievable, shame on them. They are basically on the right side although Biden bludgeons them every day—you’ll be the one to lose Ukraine. The truth of the matter is Biden has been a disaster for Ukraine for a decade. The disaster is there in the graves of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians and lost territory.

This is a war that never should have happened, it was about NATO enlargement. The Russians said no NATO on our borders. And Americans who were following this, like our CIA director Bill Burns who was then the US Ambassador to Russia in 2008, said no way, this is crazy. The entire Russian political class is against this. But Biden and Obama and Hillary Clinton and Victoria Nuland and Jake Sullivan and Tony Blinken just barged ahead, wrecked everything, and now they want another $61 billion to get them past November. It is a disgrace.

Professor Sachs is also on record about the Biden administration’s “miserable failure” in Gaza on the Useful Idiots podcast.

Please come, and tell your friends! The panel will take questions from the audience. The event will not be streamed but will be available for viewing later.

Meanwhile, LASG urges everyone to peruse its Ukraine war page and recommend it to friends as an antidote to the U.S. mainstream media, which is utterly unreliable on this topic as it is on many others.

Also, LASG encourages everyoneto approach one business or organization they know to endorse the Call for Sanity, Not Nuclear Production:

We call upon our elected officials to:

  • Opposeplutonium warhead core (“pit”) production at LANL first and foremost, but also elsewhere.
  • Opposethe design, testing, and production of new and “upgraded” nuclear weapons.
  • Prioritizeremoval and disposal of legacy plutonium waste from LANL over production of additional nuclear waste from nuclear weapons.
  • Choosehuman security, community resilience, and environmental protection over nuclear weapons production and our bloated military. We can no longer delay. We must use every opportunity, at every level of government, to prioritize human needs, invest in our communities, and build a more just and sustainable society.

Shell’s CEO Hits the Jackpot While Employees Scratch for Pennies

Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com - Sun, 04/14/2024 - 08:32

Posted by John Donovan: 14 April 2024

In a move that surprises absolutely no one, Royal Dutch Shell has defended its decision to shower CEO Ben van Beurden with a 126% pay increase last year. Because, you know, why should the average Joe get a decent paycheck when the big boss can swim in a pool of cash?

According to the oil giant’s annual report, van Beurden pocketed a jaw-dropping £17 million in 2018. And if that wasn’t enough to make you spit out your coffee, a hefty £13 million of that came from a long-term incentive plan. Talk about hitting the jackpot!

But wait, there’s more! Let’s not forget the cherry on top: a sweet £2.5 million annual bonus. Because who needs modesty when you’re already rolling in dough, right?

To put things into perspective, van Beurden’s paycheck is a whopping 143 times the salary of the average Shell employee. But hey, who’s counting when you’re too busy counting your millions?

Not surprisingly, this lavish display of corporate excess didn’t sit well with everyone. At last year’s AGM, over a quarter of investors gave Shell’s pay policy a big thumbs-down. But fear not, Shell insists they’re just “sensitive” to the debate.

And speaking of profits, Shell wants you to know that 2018 was a banner year for them. With underlying profits soaring by 36% to a staggering £16.3 billion, they argue that van Beurden’s payday is just a drop in the ocean of their success. Because who needs humility when you’ve got money to burn?

But wait, there’s more! Shell wants you to know that they’ve done their homework. They’ve meticulously compared van Beurden’s pay ratio to those of other FTSE 30 companies. And guess what? They’re totally in line with the competition! Never mind the fact that comparing apples to oranges is like comparing van Beurden’s yacht to your morning commute.

So there you have it, folks. Shell’s idea of fairness: make the CEO rich, and let the rest of us fend for ourselves. Because in the end, who needs equality when you’ve got bottomless pockets?

2024 SkS Weekly Climate Change & Global Warming News Roundup #15

Skeptical Science - Sun, 04/14/2024 - 08:26

A listing of 31 news and opinion articles we found interesting and shared on social media during the past week: Sun, April 7, 2024 thru Sat, April 13, 2024.Story of the week

Our story of the week is about adults in the room setting terms and conditions of good behavior. Here it's not parents telling children what to do but instead the widely adopted, mutually agreed system of coercive behavior modification we call "rule of law." Legislators providingcourts of justice with laws to apply are how we formalize overcoming widely harmful selfish actions— or negligent inactions. These are our proxy adults telling us what we can't do or must do— our aspirations for better nature given teeth. We could wish that we were all so perfect as to never need grownup guidance of a kind leading to fines or imprisonment, but if anything can serve to illustrate how this isn't realistic it's our failure to confront accountability for fossil fuels and what happens when nobody is willing to say "no."

Belatedly, in step our appointed adults— in this case theEuropean Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).Three articles we shared this week covered an important decision handed down by this court with respect to Verein KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland. The court finds that Switzerland is negligent in pursuing climate mitigation plans and hence is harming human rights protected by Article 8 of theEuropean Convention on Human Rights. This is an extremely important precedent, an overdue acknowledgement of human rights being climate-connected. Butthe outcome is all the more remarkable given theECtHR's previous agility in reasoning its way to tossing applicants' cases centered on human rights as they pertain to climate matters. Notably, the court has also just rendered unfavorable judgments on two other climate-connected cases, in ways that sometimes seemed to defy common sense. TheSabin Center for Climate Change Law provides a short article providing context helping us to understand this single verdict as a sea change, in itsintroduction to a symposium on the topic.

Shell’s London Departure: The Ultimate “What the Frack” Moment

Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com - Sun, 04/14/2024 - 08:08

Posted by John Donovan: 14 April 2024

In a stunning twist, Shell, Britain’s oil giant turned Wall Street wannabe, is eyeing a breakup with London. What’s the fuss? Well, according to CEO Wael Sawan, London’s cramping Shell’s style. But is this really about undervaluation or just a ploy to pump up the share price?

Sawan’s singing the same old tune: London’s dragging Shell down. With taxes, politics, and capital woes, it’s like the city’s throwing a share price pity party. “I have a location that clearly seems to be undervalued,” he moans to Bloomberg. Cue the violins.

His predecessor, Ben van Beurden, is singing backup, lamenting how Europe’s “conspiring” against oil companies like Shell. Cry us a river, fellas.

But let’s cut through the crude: Shell’s just playing the “woe is me” card to wiggle out of accountability. They’re facing a court order to cut emissions, and suddenly New York’s looking like a tempting escape hatch.

Sure, London’s not perfect. But neither is Shell. They talk the talk on climate, but when push comes to shove, they’re still drilling and spilling.

The real kicker? If Shell jumps ship, it’s not just London feeling the pain. Pensioners, investors, and the entire UK economy will feel the aftershock.

So, will Shell really take the plunge across the pond? Or is this just a slick move to shake up the stock price? Either way, it’s enough to make you say, “What the frack, Shell?”

Mexico City’s metro system is sinking fast. Yours could be next.

Grist - Sun, 04/14/2024 - 06:00

This story was originally published byWIRED and is reproduced here as part of theClimate Deskcollaboration.

With its expanse of buildings and concrete, Mexico City may not look squishy — but it is. Ever since the Spanish conquistadors drained Lake Texcoco to make way for more urbanization, the land has been gradually compacting under the weight. It’s a phenomenon known as subsidence, and the result is grim: Mexico City issinking up to 20 inches a year, unleashing havoc on its infrastructure.

That includes the city’s metro system, the second-largest in North America after New York City’s. Now, satellites have allowed scientists to meticulously measure the rate of sinking across Mexico City, mapping where subsidence has the potential to damage railways. “When you’re here in the city, you get used to buildings being tilted a little,” says Darío Solano‐Rojas, a remote-sensing scientist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. “You can feel how the rails are wobbly. Riding the metro in Mexico City feels weird. You don’t know if it’s dangerous or not — youfeellike it’s dangerous, but you don’t have that certainty.”

In a recentstudyin the journalScientific Reports, Solano‐Rojas went in search of certainty. Using radar satellite data, he and his team measured how the elevation changed across the city between 2011 and 2020. Subsidence isn’t uniform; the rate depends on several factors. The most dramatic instances globally are due to the overextraction of groundwater: Pump enough liquid out and the ground collapses like an empty water bottle. That’s why Jakarta, Indonesia, is sinkingup to 10 inches a year. Over in California’s San Joaquin Valley, the land has sunkas much as 28 feetin the past century, due to farmers pumping out too much groundwater.

A similar draining of aquifers is happening in Mexico City, which isgripped by a worsening water crisis. “The subsurface is like a sponge: We get the water out, and then it deforms, because it’s losing volume,” says Solano‐Rojas. How much volume depends on the underlying sediment in a given part of the city — the ancient lake didn’t neatly layer equal proportions of clay and sand in every area. “That produces a lot of different behaviors on the surface,” Solano‐Rojas adds.

Subsidence rates across Mexico City vary substantially, from 20 inches annually to not at all, where the city is built atop solid volcanic rock. This creates “differential subsidence,” where the land sinks differently not just square mile to square mile, or block to block, but square foot to square foot. If a road, railway, or building is sinking differently at one end than the other, it’ll destabilize.

That’s how you get the tilted road traffic barriers at Acatitla Station, shown above. And below, the deformation of tracks at Oceanía Station. If in either of these places the land was subsiding at a uniform rate, the tracks and road would also sink uniformly, and you might not have a problem. “We found that some of the segments of the metro system are moving faster” than it was designed for, says Solano‐Rojas. The study found that nearly half of elevated segments of the metro are experiencing differential subsidence. This would imply that they would need to be serviced before the system’s typical threshold of 50 years, at which point a segment would need rehabilitation or repair to continue optimal operation.

Sistema de Transporte Colectivo, which operates the Mexico City Metro, did not provide comment for this story after repeated inquiries.

A metro system by its nature is a sprawling web of lines: Mexico City’s includes140 milesof tracks running underground in subways, aboveground as you can see above, and on elevated platforms. “It goes from areas that are really stable, to areas that are subsiding at 30 centimeters per year, or even almost 40 centimeters every year,” Solano‐Rojas. “So the goal here was to see where the most damage could be.”

That damage comes in a few forms. As the land sinks, it can create divots for rainwater to accumulate, causing flooding along railways. That can mess with the electrical system that powers the trains, Solano‐Rojas says.

And elevation changes can increase the grade of the rails. The metro’s trains are designed to operate on a maximum slope of 3.5 percent, Solano‐Rojas says, but some stretches of track are now double that due to subsidence. “Trains can get derailed very easily if there is a slight change in the leveling of the railways,” says Manoochehr Shirzaei, an environmental security expert at Virginia Tech who studies subsidence but wasn’t involved in the new paper. “Most of the infrastructure has certain thresholds; it tolerates a certain level of differential land subsidence. But often they don’t account for the rate that we see, for example, in Mexico City.”

Solano‐Rojas and his colleagues found subsidence in the area of an overpass near the Olivos station, which collapsed in 2021 while a Metro train was traveling over it. “We did part of this analysis before 2021, and we detected that that area was having differential displacements,” says Solano‐Rojas. “We were like, ‘Oh, yeah, it looks like something could be happening here in the future.’ We think that it’s not a coincidence that we found this.” Solano‐Rojas was careful to say that the potential contribution of subsidence to the disaster would require further evaluation, and official investigations havecited construction errorsand do not mention subsidence.

For this study, the researchers looked at the metro infrastructure above ground, not the subway segments — basically, the parts of the system they could verify visually. (The photo below shows the differential subsidence of columns supporting an overpass.) But by providing the system’s operators with information on how quickly its infrastructure might be subsiding, their work can hopefully inform interventions. Engineers can add material underneath railways, for instance, to restore lost elevation. Bolstering subways, though, could be much more challenging. “We don’t have a concrete solution for that,” says Shirzaei. “In most cases, when that happens, it just results in shutting down the project and trying to open a new lane.”

This isn’t just Mexico City’s problem. Earlier this year, Shirzaei and his colleagues found that theEast Coast’s infrastructure is in serious troubledue to slower — yet steady — subsidence. They calculated that 29,000 square miles of the Atlantic Coast are exposed to sinking of up to 0.08 inches a year, affecting up to 14 million people and 6 million properties. Some 1,400 square miles are sinking up to 0.20 inches a year.

Differential subsidence is not only threatening railways, the researchers found, but all kinds of other critical infrastructure, like levees and airports. A metropolis like New York City has the added problem of sheer weightpushing down on the ground, which alone leads to subsidence. The Bay Area, too,is sinking. On either coast, subsidence isgreatly exacerbating the problem of sea level rise: The land is going down just as the water is coming up.

Wherever in the world it’s happening, people have to stop overextracting groundwater to slow subsidence. Newfangled systems are already relieving pressure on aquifers. It’s getting cheaper and cheaper torecycle toilet water into drinking water, for instance. And more cities aredeploying “sponge” infrastructure — lots of green spaces that allow rainwater tosoak into the underlying aquifer, essentially reinflating the land to fend off subsidence. Such efforts are increasingly urgent as climate change exacerbates droughts in many parts of the world, including Mexico City, putting ever more pressure on groundwater supplies.

With increasing satellite data, cities can get a better handle on the subsidence they can’t immediately avoid. “I really feel like governments have a chance to use these kinds of studies to have a more structured plan of action,” says Solano‐Rojas.

PDX Jail Support: Interview and Audiozine

It's Going Down - Sat, 04/13/2024 - 23:18

Molotov Now! speaks with members of PDX Jail support about their organizing efforts, mutual aid, and building widespread jail support.

A member of PDX Jail Support joins Molotov Now! to discuss their efforts creating a culture of mutual aid based around the idea of widespread community jail support. They have spent the last four years building a network of volunteers to stand outside local jails and connect with people coming out of jail. This is done with all arrestees, not simply when there is a need for increased jail support following a protest event.

We will also be debuting the audiozine we collaborated on with them detailing how to build a jail support network where you live. We hope you find this episode as inspiring as we did. It really lit a fire in us to get something similar going here where we live. The potential for radicalization is immense in these highly vulnerable and personal connections.

Requiem For The New York Times

- Sat, 04/13/2024 - 18:52

I am sitting in the auditorium at The New York Times. It is the first time I have been back in nearly two decades. It will be the last. The newspaper is a pale reflection of what it was when I worked there, beset by numerous journalistic fiascos, rudderless leadership and myopic cheerleading of the military debacles in the Middle East, Ukraine and the genocide in Gaza, where one of the Times contributions to the mass slaughter of Palestinians was an editorial refusingto back an unconditional ceasefire. Many seated in the auditorium are culpable.

Tax Resistance Movement Grows In Response To US Support For Genocide

- Sat, 04/13/2024 - 18:49

Since October 7, 2023, the slaughter of Gaza has played out on phone screens across the world and those following have seen indescribable images of violence. For many, beneath the experience of bearing witness to genocide is the awareness that, as Americans, it is our tax dollars funding the butchering of a nation.

With this knowledge, more Americans are coming to the conclusion that they can no longer pay for the weapons and other support going directly to Israel, a settler colony that has murdered over 40,000 Palestinian people in Gaza over the past six months.
